Look beyond the material name

Words such as wood, sisal and fabric are a starting point, but they do not fully describe a finished product. Thickness, construction, texture and finishing all influence how a piece looks and feels. A clear specification reduces the gap between a reference photograph and an approved sample.

For a wood component, ask for the actual construction and finish being proposed. For a textile, discuss the intended location and the sample that will be used for approval.

Review scratching surfaces in context

A scratching post is more than a rope sample. Consider the usable scratching length, the attachment of the material and how the post connects to the wider structure. Review the assembled sample rather than judging a small material swatch alone.

Record the agreed rope and construction details so the approved sample can be compared with later production. If the design changes, check whether the surface or fixing method also needs to change.

Compare comfort and care requirements

A bed cushion or covered platform needs a clear care description. Confirm whether a cover is removable and which cleaning method is suitable for the actual material. Avoid describing every textile as washable without checking the specification.

Compare color samples in consistent light and review how the fabrics sit alongside the wood and rope. Material coordination is easier when the whole product is visible together.

Keep an approved reference

Agree a reference sample and a written specification for the finished product. Include the important material choices, colors and finishes, together with any points that still require confirmation.
