From Product Brief to First Sample

Begin with the intended use

A good product brief explains who the item is for, where it will be used and what matters most. For pet furniture, that might include the available footprint, preferred materials or a particular combination of climbing and resting features.

Share reference images with notes describing what you like about each one. A photograph alone can leave room for different interpretations about size, construction and finish.

Separate essentials from preferences

List requirements that must be retained, such as dimensions or brand colors, separately from ideas that can be explored. This helps the development discussion focus on decisions that will shape the product.

Include your target market, estimated quantity and packaging expectations. If you already have drawings or artwork, provide the current version and identify any details that are still open.

Use the sample to answer specific questions

Sampling is most useful when there is a clear review checklist. Compare the structure, material choices, finish, assembly and packaging against the agreed brief. Photograph any point that needs a change and describe the intended result.

Keep feedback in one revision list so changes are not lost across separate messages. A revised dimension can affect other parts of the design, so ask for connected changes to be reviewed together.

Confirm what is approved before moving forward

Before production, agree the final specification and the reference sample. Record outstanding points rather than treating a general approval as a decision on every detail. Sample costs, order requirements and production timing are confirmed for each project.
